Recently, a hand sanitizer company, Durisan claimed its product is 100% effective against coronavirus. However, it was reported that it is not according to the standards of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Hand sanitizers with an alcohol content of 60 percent or more are recommended by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to be used for protection against the coronavirus while the Durisan hand sanitizer is alcohol-free.

The FDA has taken action against the company for their false claims. The authority has ordered Durisan to halt the selling of their hand sanitizer which the FDA has mentioned in its warning letter to be non-approved, non-certified, and ineffective against COVID-19.

In his news conference held in March, Governor Ron DeSantis promoted the use of this specific hand sanitizer while saying that he keeps the sanitizer with him.

During his conference, he also said that the hand sanitizer is a good product while he does not know about Durisan, the hand sanitizer company. This product was available on Amazon because people don’t know about it.

After the warning issued to Durisan by the FDA, the spokesperson of the governor said that Governor DeSantis follows the preventive measures suggested by the CDC and uses FDA approved alcohol-based hand sanitizers. The DeSantis administration follows the CDC and FDA guidelines for prevention against the coronavirus. However, hand washing for 20 seconds with a hand wash and water is the best method of prevention.

Durisan has also claimed that its hand sanitizer is effective for up to 24 hours against disease-causing germs by killing 99.9% pathogens. The FDA has mentioned this claim to be misleading for the public and harmful for human health in the warning letter issued to the company.

On May 7, 2020, Durisan was given 48 hours by the FDA to take immediate action.

After reviewing the warning letter, Durisan issued a statement saying that the company has removed the segment regarding the hand sanitizer from their website as well as the social media as ordered by the FDA. The company is responsible for conveying the facts to the public and always support their customers.

The company also stated that all their previous product labels have been approved by the FDA and according to the labeling guidelines. Their products are external labs tested and manufactured per the EPA testing and observe all the FDA rules and regulations for the production of their products.

The company spokesperson also said that there is no hand sanitizer or any other sanitation product available which is known to effectively kill the coronavirus.

Many parts of the world are currently following a partial or complete lockdown to control coronavirus spread. But the health experts have warned that such preventive measures might increase the risk of another deadly disease, HIV.

Travis Sanchez who is an epidemiologist at Emory University has worked on this subject and concluded that HIV is a big health risk during this time when people are at home. He conducted an online survey with 1000 participants who characterize themselves as gays. Nearly half of them added that their sexual partners have been reduced during this coronavirus lockdown period. They also reported that finding the new partners through hook-up apps was also reduced during this time.

It looks like a good thing, he says. Ideally, it means that the risk of HIV is reduced but in reality, the situation is opposite to this.

The coronavirus lockdown, which at one side has reduced the random sexual partners in gay men has also reduced the STDs testing facilities as thousands of testing clinics and medical centers are unable to provide these services for now. Sanchez warns that it means that a person is unable to get himself checked during this time. So even if he has a sexually transmitted disease like HIV, he would never know it.

Ahmed, an assistant professor in the Department of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, Patria Rojas, and a doctoral candidate in the Department of Epidemiology, Abraham Degarege Mengist investigated more than hundred students of FIU. They examined the connection between the students’ adherence to Pap smear guidelines and their knowledge about cervical cancer.

More than sixty percent of them hadn’t annual checkups within a year and the remaining students had never received a Pap test. The reasons for being not tested and annual checkups were fear and lack of interest.

The recent findings show that college students would be more likely to seek and acquire cervical cancer screenings because of their higher literacy with regards to health and their insight into risky sexual behaviors.

UVC lamps can help fighting against the Coronavirus pandemic

The initial findings of this research have been submitted to Nature.

UVC lamps use Ultraviolet-C light and it has been previously used for sanitation purposes in the food industry and hospitals to keep the environment clean from fungi, viruses, and bacteria.

The Ultraviolet-C rays are not generally safe to use in the presence of humans as it is linked to causing skin and eye diseases.

However, the Chinese subway system has used this technology during the night time when the trains are not operational which the New York subway system is also following to decontaminate the trains.

Researchers at the Center for Radiological Research in Columbia are analyzing short-wavelength UVC rays known as far UVC of 222 nanometers which target viruses but it is harmless for humans. The director of the center, David Brenner said that the UVC rays at this particular wavelength cannot pass through the barrier of skin and eyes so it is safe to use.

Hence, UVC lamps can be effectively used to control the virus in crowded public areas with closed spaces where the risk of spread of the virus is high.

US President Donald Trump gave a baffling statement in the last month which seemed to be influenced by the research conducted by the federal department. He mentioned the use of UV rays to penetrate the body and eliminate the virus, while the federal research is regarding the use of natural light which does not have UVC rays hence, not effective against the coronavirus.

The Columbian team of researchers started studying the effect of far UVC on antibiotic-resistant bacteria in 2013. It was then used against other viruses including the influenza virus and now it is being tested against the novel coronavirus.

The research started not more than a month ago and the results show that it is proven to kill the virus in a few minutes. The research was started in a high-level biosafety lab as the coronavirus is highly contagious.

The experiment was successful against viruses present on surfaces and it will be further conducted against viruses present in the air due to the coughing of an infected person. An experiment is also conducted side by side to see the effect of far UVC on humans.

Lab mice and rodents have been exposed to 20 times more intense rays as compared to humans for 40 weeks for five days weekly and 8 hours daily. The experiment has been successful so far and it will be conducted for another 20 weeks.

Although the research has not been completed yet, the industries have already started bulk production of ultraviolet lamps under the pressure of the global economy which is already falling apart.

UVC lamps have already been used to identify real gems by the diamond industry at a commercial level for the past couple of years.

Due to the pandemic, the FDA has eased the rules and regulations for the production of disinfecting equipment and substances. Japanese manufacturer Shinji Kameda, chief operations officer in the US for Ushio said that there will be a high demand for the commercial production of UVC lamps to be used in public areas including hotels, restaurants, schools, and airplanes.

The UVC lamps are already in use in some hospitals in Japan and the production will be increased by October. Currently, the cost of these 222-nanometer lamps is from $500 to $800.

Brenner said that the COVID-19 pandemic could have been controlled if the research on far UVC lamps was started a couple of years ago.

The scientists are desperately looking for tools and methods to control the coronavirus pandemic and reduce the risk of infection in public spaces.

Hernandez found that vitamin K had frequently been related to fracture risk, however not bone density.
