Travel Restrictions are Hardly Helping in Coronavirus Spread

The transmission of coronavirus has reduced to a small extent because traveling is strictly prohibited not only inside China but also outside of China. About ninety percent of the ban on travel is placed on the citizens of Wuhan and it has postponed the spread of coronavirus by three to five days. Prohibiting travel from Wuhan to other countries is not the ultimate solution to this problem because it may reduce the transmission of coronavirus only for a short time.

The detailed findings of this study are published in the journal Science.

The patients not detected yet can spread coronavirus in unaffected countries because they are roaming around the globe. A group of the Northeastern University of Boston finds that only moderate results are expected from the prohibition of travel to areas affected with coronavirus.

Chinazzi’s team reveals that the solution to delay the spread of the virus could be attained by restricting its spread. To do so some steps are guided by United States health officials; disinfecting surfaces, staying indoors when unwell, avoiding handshaking, sanitizing hands and avoiding crowded places.

Investigators plotted a model containing data from across two hundred countries divided into more than thirty-two hundred sub-populations as well as data was collected from ground travel data and International Air Transport Association (IATA) in about thirty countries.

Researchers find that the actual start of coronavirus is uncertain based on the results that about 40 cases were reported in Wuhan from November 2019 to December.

On 23rd January 2020 novel coronavirus raised an alarming situation in China and its government strictly banned the travel of citizens and made it compulsory to stay indoors and avoid crowded places. In addition, it was revealed transmission of coronavirus was checked by a ninety percent ban on movement but the virus was already rooted in different areas of China. It was estimated that in some cases an infected person doesn’t show symptoms that’s why around sixty percent of infected patients remain undetected.

By mid-February, the travel restrictions to and from Wuhan, slow the spread of the virus from China to other nations by seventy-seven percent but those advantages were not long-lasting. Because instead of travel bans, countries like South Korea, Iran, and Italy were reporting the viral outbreak. Researchers added that a large undetected coronavirus exposed population has been circulating globally even after strong travel bans.

In New York City Dr. Robert Glatter, a physician at Lenox Hill Hospital agreed that travel restrictions have reduced the transmission of coronavirus but the significant measures are identification at initial stage, isolation and tracing the contact of the infected person.

Coronavirus has affected a hundred, thousand individuals till the date and killed about thirty-four hundred people worldwide. While in the US two hundred and twenty people have been diagnosed with coronavirus and among them, fourteen have died.

The study concludes that along with with travel bans personal efforts like frequent handwashing, avoiding crowded places, staying indoors and covering sneezes and coughs will be significant to reduce the chances of getting coronavirus infection.
