Aspirin, statins, and metformin are the three most common medicines but using them together may save people from lung cancer, according to a new study.
The complete details of this study are published in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology (JTO).
These three medicines that this study talks about are commonly available. Nearly 35 million people worldwide are using statins to regulate their cholesterol levels. More than 120 million people are using metformin to regulate their sugar levels and from 6 to 10 million people are on aspirin on an almost daily basis.

The purpose of this study was to check if these three medicines have any type of association with each other that may or may not be related to lung cancer. If this link is proven to be true, it may account to save people from lung cancer.
The data analyzed by this study was taken from The Korean National Health Insurance Services (KNHIS). This is a Korean health care system which contains the record of millions of people.
Dong Wook Shin from the Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine (Seoul) is the first author and lead investigator of this study.
According to Dr. Shin, there is no study that combines aspirin, statins, along with metformin, and analyzes using this trio to save people from lung cancer.
There are various types and stages of lung cancers and based on which stage a person is, planing their treatment plan brings little or high effect in their recovery.
Nearly 80% of the cases are non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) include adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and large cell carcinoma as its sub-types.
The occurrence of lung cancer was determined with the help of a registered diagnostic code.
All these three medicines are for cardiovascular conditions that could be closely linked with lung cancer and death caused by it. The research team grouped these participants into eight groups, on the basis of their usage for any of these three medicines.
Using aspirin, statins, and metformin together can reduce the chances of lung cancer and save millions of people. In a combination, there are high chances that the protective capacities of these medicines increase which helps to fight against cancer and beat death.

The results from their findings suggest that using aspirin, statins, and metformin can protect and save a person from lung diseases including cancer. Using aspirin and metformin together can prevent the cellular proliferation that takes place inside the lungs. It works by activating protein kinase via AMP which actually triggers the lipogenesis of the cancer cells.
Dr. Shin assumes that using all these medicines together can be involved in more than one biological procedure that may directly or indirectly involved in lung cancer.
